Overview[]
The 1889-90 season was Fulham's seventh in the history of the football club.
They were forced to move grounds for the third time in as many seasons, this time using a field in Parsons Green known as Purser's Cross. This was a fairly enclosed space, and allowed the club to charge a small admission for matches for the first time ever. However, not only was there a tree on (or very close to) the pitch, it was constantly waterlogged as therefore many matches were postponed or cancelled. Changing rooms were provided at the nearby Rose & Crown pub, which is now a brasserie.
The club also decided to change their colours for the first time. They had ditched the sky blue and navy halved shirts for black and white stripes. This was possibly owing to the fact that they had recently changed name, dropping the church link of St Andrew's from their title and therefore a slight change in identity within the area.
There is very little information on the 1889-90 season. This is due to the fact that the West London Advertiser published two editions per week; the midweek Wednesday edition would often have most of the Fulham match reports in there, but these midweek editions were not kept by the British Library.
Fulham reached the Semi-finals of the West London Cup for the second year running, but were knocked out of the competition once again by rivals Stanley in a 4-0 loss in which club captain Harry Coleman broke his leg.
