Overview[]

The 1939-40 season was Fulham's 58th season, and the first interrupted by war since the 1918-19 season after the outbreak of World War II. The season began as normal, but one day after the third league match of the season, war was declared against Germany and put a stop to football as they knew it for the next six years.

Once it was clear that professional football could not continue, the Football League hastily organised several leagues for clubs around the country; the leagues each containing clubs of certain regions to reduce travel. Fulham were placed with other fellow London-based clubs, firstly in League South B which ran largely for the first half of the season, and then League South C for the latter half.

Such was the nature of war, many of the players could not play regularly if at all, as they was called into action. Most of the lineups where made up of a handful of players on the clubs' books, with the rest 'guests' from other professional clubs. It was commonplace in many matches for nearly an entire starting XI to be composed of players who were not affiliated with the club they were playing for.

The League War Cup was introduced towards the end of April 1940, and this competition in essence replaced the FA Cup which had also been cancelled due to the war. Fulham nearly made it to the Final, but were defeated by West Ham United at Stamford Bridge in a closely fought contest by four goals to three.

A notable fact was that shirt numbers were introduced by the Football League for the first time (2-11 for outfielders, with the goalkeeper not wearing a number).
