Overview[]

The 2001-02 season was Fulham's 104th of competitive football, and the club's 1st season in the Premier League and return to the top-flight since relegation in 1968.

Chairman Mohamed Al-Fayed made his intentions clear by aiming to become "the Manchester United of the south" as he once quoted, and by bringing in big-name signings such as goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar from Juventus & striker Steve Marlet from Lyon, no one could deny the clubs ambition.

However, despite a handful of good results, a 13th place finish in the Premier League was slightly disappointing given the optimism amongst many fans at the outset, especially a run of six defeats in a row in the second half of the season. With hindsight it wasn't a terrible campaign given the strength of the league, and with the club retaining their Premier League status for the following season.

Fulham enjoyed a good run in the FA Cup, in which they reached the Semi-final for the first time in 27 years - losing out to their West London rivals Chelsea in the tie which took place at Villa Park.

Goals were found much harder to come by compared with the 2000-01 season, in which they were in abundance, and Louis Saha, Barry Hayles and new signing Steed Malbranque could not manage more than eight league goals each. Hayles finished top scorer in all competitions with twelve.
