Berti Schötterl was at Fulham from 2018 until 2019. He was signed on a short term contract as a development goalkeeper to train with the club. Never appearing for the first team or the U23 squad, he was sent out on three short loan spells to non-League clubs during his stay.
Career[]
Before Fulham[]
Born in Nuremburg, Germany, Berti's father Herbert was a former goalkeeper and a goalkeeping coach at Greuther Fürth where he joined the academy. A chance encounter with a Barnsley coach whilst the Schötterl's were on holiday in Turkey led to the Yorkshire club offering Berti a three-year academy deal, which was turned down.
Berti eventually travelled to England and spent one year with Watford's academy before leaving in 2013. After returning to Germany and having short stints with several non-League clubs, he signed for Inter Leipzig in 2016 and spent two years with them before another oppertunity in England arose.
Fulham (2018-2019)[]
Berti had actually had an unsuccessful trial with Fulham in 2014. The U21 squad's goalkeeping coach Martin Brennan would later arrange a goalkeeping camp in Portugal for professional goalkeepers from various countries to share experiences and develop. In 2017, having recently recovered from his ACL injury, Berti was invited to attend, and met Fulham’s head goalkeeping coach, Vic Bettinelli who he impressed enough to be offered a trial at Fulham.
His attitude and ability convinced the club that they wanted to keep him around, even if they didn’t have a real place for him, and he was offered an initial six-month contract on 1 February 2018, that was then extended by another year. During that year, the club would give him accomodation, he'd train with them and they would find him several loan moves.
He enjoyed spells with Dartford, Woking and Metropolitan Police before departing the club in August 2019.
After Fulham[]
After his release from Fulham Berti had offers from English clubs, but with both his mother and father suffering from cancer, he decided to move back to Germany where he signed for Lokomotive Leipzig. After spending the 2019-20 season with them, he left to re-join one of his former clubs in SV Seligenporten in 2021.
