Fergus Hunt was an inside right who played at Fulham from 1903 until 1905. He was said to have possessed great speed in his early days, with an accurate shot from all angles. He was signed in May 1903 from Woolwich Arsenal amongst a large influx of players.
Career[]
Before Fulham[]
Fergus was born in the Rotherham suburb of Masbrough in early 1875. As a teenager, he played football for Yorkshire sides Mexborough Olympic and Mexborough before a short stint up at Middlesbrough Ironopolis. He then moved to Football League side Darwen, where after scoring 27 goals in 58 games he caught the eye of Woolwich Arsenal.
Joining the Gunners on 3 August 1897, he would go on to be their top scorer for 1897-98 with 12 goals and another 15 the following season, eventually tallying up 34 goals in 77 matches for the Plumstead club. The goals dried up during his spells with West Ham United and his second spell with Arsenal.
Fulham (1903-1905)[]
He signed terms with Fulham in May 1903, ahead of the 1903-04 season. He was one of many new faces at Craven Cottage that season; this was due to the fact that the club were to only be elected into Division One of the Southern League if they were able to prove to the committee that they could gather a team strong enough to compete.
Fergus only managed 3 goals in 23 Southern League games for Fulham, appearing at outside and inside right, as well as centre forward in a team that found it difficult to score goals.
After Fulham[]
After barely featuring for Fulham's first team in 1904-05, Fergus moved back up north, this time to join Burton United. Here he played with former Fulham teammates Charlie Axcell and Will Bradshaw. He was later released by them two years later after they lost their League status in 1907. He then moved to Shildon to end his playing career after scoring 95 goals in 291 appearances in the Football & Southern Leagues.
Fergus was living in Harperly in County Durham by 1911 and working as a coal miner. He passed away in early 1953 in Newcastle upon Tyne.
