George Smith was an early Fulham player who was at the club from its inception in 1879 until around 1888, playing as a Full back and then later as a goalkeeper.
Career[]
Before Fulham[]
George was born in Bedford in 1868, and moved with his family to West London at a young age.
Fulham (1879-1888)[]
George was one of the original group of young players who helped to form the club in 1879 (or as late as 1883 according to some historians). He was part of the cricket team which formed St Andrews in the earliest years, and along with Tom Norman, Harry Johnson, George Read and William Andrews helped create a football club to run alongside the cricket.
Of the lineups we know of from the early 1880's, he would turn out as a full back, until the 1887-88 season, where he appeared in goal for a few matches.
His younger brother John also played for the club in the years after George stopped playing and would also become club secretary in late 1890.
After Fulham[]
George continued to work for the Metropolitan Police, whom he had joined in April 1888, serving until July 1913.
He passed away in 1926.
