Harry Bradshaw was the first appointed manager of Fulham F.C.. He was brought in from Woolwich Arsenal in April 1904 for a substantial sum of money, and was instrumental in the clubs evolution as a professional side, which included two Southern League titles and entry into the Football League in 1907.
Career[]
Before Fulham[]
Harry was born and raised in Burnley, Lancashire, and was a keen Rugby Union player in his youth, playing for Burnley Rugby club before going on to become secretary once his playing days were over. After making his name in Rugby football, he moved over to Association football in 1894 as he became manager of Burnley FC.
He led Burnley to a Second Division championship in 1898, and narrowly missed out on securing them the First Division title in 1899, with the Clarets finishing in 3rd position.
Now with a proven record in professional football as an administrator, shrewd businessman and clever tactician, Harry made his first move down to London to manage Woolwich Arsenal in 1899. In the space of five years, he took the Gunners from the verge of bankruptcy to a team that won promotion to the First Division. With little funds at his disposal, he bought some bargain buys and adopted the Scottish style of football of the time; a short, accurate passing game and with this came improved results.
Fulham (1904-1909)[]
Harry was tempted away from Arsenal in April 1904 as Fulham had offered a lot of money for his services. He became Fulham's first full-time manager, and secured two Southern League Division One titles in consecutive seasons in 1905-06 and 1906-07.
The club were clearly able to now play at a higher standard of football, and their application to the Football League was accepted in 1907 and they entered the Second Division. Harry steered them to 4th place and just missed out on promotion in their debut season in the Football League. This was coupled with a Semi-final appearance in the FA Cup to cap off a fantastic 1907-08 season.
After Fulham[]
Once his contract had expired in 1909, he chose to become Secretary for the Southern League, a position which he held until 1921.
Harry died three years later in September 1924 at the age of 71.
