Hayden Mullins is the current head coach of the U21 squad. A player who spent his career playing in the Premier League and the Championship, he has had managerial experience with Watford U23 and Colchester United.
Playing career[]
A defensive midfielder, Hayden came through the ranks at Crystal Palace, making his debut for the first team in 1998 at the age of 19. He went on to amass over 350 appearances in all comeptitions for the Eagles over six seasons.
He left to join West Ham United in October 2003 for a fee totalling £800,000. With the Hammers, he helped them earn promotion back to the Premier League in 2005, and stayed there for a further four seasons, leaving for Portsmouth in the January transfer window of 2009. It was here that he won an FA Cup runners-up medal, narrowly losing out to Chelsea in the 2010 Final.
He finished the last few years of his playing career with Birmingham City and Notts County, retiring from playing in 2015 at the age of 36.
Managerial career[]
Before Fulham[]
After his retirement from playing, he joined Brentford as an academy coach in September 2015, working with the U14-U18 age groups. He left after only a few months, joining Reading in January 2016 as Loan Manager; overseeing all of the clubs' players who were out on loan.
Hayden joined Watford in June 2016, as assistant manager/lead coach for their Under-23 team under Harry Kewell. Later in April 2017, he was promoted to manage the team, and stayed in this post until the summer of 2020 when he moved to Colchester United. He was initially appointed as first team coach, but was given the managers position in February 2021 after Steve Ball was sacked.
In January 2022, Hayden was sacked after a poor run of results for Colchester. He went on to take up a short coaching role with Woking, before gaining international experience; coaching and taking charge of the Turks and Caicos national team in March 2023.
Fulham (2023-present)[]
Fulham announced on 26 July 2023 that Hayden had been appointed as head coach of the U21 squad. He enjoyed a fantastic first season in charge of the team, finishing a very respectable 3rd position in the league, whilst bringing in silverware in the form of the Premier League Cup. He also guided the side to reach the knockout stage of the EFL Trophy for the first time in their history.
