Career[]

Before Fulham[]

Jim played for South-East Counties side Ford United (now Redbridge) until 1980.

Fulham (1979-1985 & 1987-1995)[]

Jim was invited down to trial with Fulham in 1979 whilst he was 16 years old. After a trail game in which he impressed, the club offered him a non-contract working agreement due to his young age.

After a serious injury to first choice Gerry Peyton in January 1981, Jim was given his oppertunity. In his own words "I had Gerry Peyton in front of me [in the pecking order] and I also had Perry Digweed. Then there was also a young lad called Dougie Hatcher who was in front of me as well, so I was fourth choice really. I was very fortunate with the way things happened but Gerry had a very big influence because obviously he was an international at Fulham, and we got on very well. It was quite funny because Perry ended up going to Brighton and Dougie was out on loan, so Malcolm (Macdonald) put me in the first team because Gerry wasn’t having the greatest of times."

Jim made his debut for the first team on 31 January 1981, keeping a clean sheet in a 2-0 win over Swindon Town at Craven Cottage. He then remained in place between the sticks for the remainder of the 1980-81 season, but then only played twice over the next two campaigns. in 1983-84, he saw more gametime as he shared the role with Gerry Peyton, however he was sold to Southend United in March 1985 for a fee of £12,000.

After impressive performances for Southend, Jim was brought back to Fulham a little over two years later when manager Ray Lewington paid £50,000 for his services; over four times the amount he was sold for. In his first two seasons back, Jim helped the Whites to a mid-table and a fourth place finish in the Third Division, before flirting with relegation two seasons on the trot.

On 9 September 1989 during a 3-2 win away at Crewe Alexandra, Jim cleared the ball upfield late in the game, for the wind to take it up over opposition goalkeeper Mel Rees and into the net. However, centre forward Andy Sayer had sprinted towards the ball and poked the ball as it crossed the goal-line. Fans debate whose goal it belongs to, but official records award the goal to Sayer.

After Fulham[]

Jim signed for Gillingham on 4 August 1995 on a free transfer after his contract was not renewed with Fulham. He went on to make over 100 lague appearances for them before retiring in 1999 at the age of 36. He did however, briefly come out of retirement in 2003 as a backup goalkeeper at Brentford but did not make any appearances.

He briefly moved into management, having a short spell in charge of his former club Redbridge from January to October 2005. However, this would be his only forray into management as he settled into the more comfortable role of goalkeeper coach - working for former club Gilligham in 2007 before spending three years with Crystal Palace from 2008 until 2010.

Jim returned to coach for Gillingham on a part-time basis before he joing Southampton at the start of the 2011-12 season until January 2013. He then worked for Dagenham & Redbridge, Chelmsford City & Maidstone United.

In 2022, he joined Dartford as goalkeeping coach.
