João Palhinha played for Fulham from 2022 until 2024 as a defensive midfielder. Signed in the summer of 2022 for £20 million after spending a decade at Sporting, he represents Portugal at international level.

Career

Fulham (2022-2024)

João's signature was announced by Fulham on 4 July 2022, for a reported fee of £17 million plus £3 million in future add-ons.

He enjoyed a fantastic first season with the club, becoming a hugely influential part of the midfield and helping the team reach a respectable 10th placed finish in the Premier League. After forty appearances in all competitions and four goals to his name, he won the Player of the Season award for the 2022-23 season.

João was unfortunate to suffer a dislocated shoulder injury in Fulham's first pre-season match of 2023, and despite concerns he could be sidelined for a lengthy period, he made his return in the second League match of 2023-24. He was then the subject of a high profile move to German champions Bayern Munich late in the 2023 summer transfer window. He had virtually completed the move to them until Fulham pulled the plug on the move at the last minute, having not found any suitable replacements for him.

Despite the disappointment for João on the collapsed transfer, he signed a new deal with Fulham and committed himself to the club for the rest of the 2023-24 season. He then went on to score important equalisers in the 2-2 draw at Arsenal and the 1-1 draw at Brighton.

After another strong season at the club, transfer speculation mounted oncce again, and this time he was off to Bayern Munich for good in July 2024.

João signature to Bayern Munich was confirmed on 11 July 2024, for an upfront fee of £42.3 million, with a further £4.2 million in future add-ons.
