Marcel Gecov was a midfielder, formerly of Fulham. He was signed by Martin Jol as a 23-year-old to bolster the midfield in a season where the club entered the Europa League for the second time. He only spent one season at the club before moving on due to lack of playing time with a handful of appearances.
Career[]
Before Fulham[]
Gecov began his club career with Slavia Prague at the age of six. The young midfielder went through all the youth teams of Slavia and was just 17 when he was promoted to their first team , though ultimately he did not make any appearances for them. In January 2007, Gecov was sent to SK Kladno on loan for the rest of the season where he saw much first team action in a relatively successful spell. This would have seemed to have put him in the window for selling, and the following year in January 2008, he signed a three and a half year contract with Slovan Liberec. It was here that he truly grew as a footballer and made his appearances for his national U21 side from 2008 to 2011.
Fulham (2011-2012)[]
Marcel signed for Fulham on 20 July 2011 for an undisclosed fee thought to be in the region of £700,000 from Slovan Liberec. Thought a useful addition of youth to an ageing midfield, he was brought in by Martin Jol but found game time hard to come by. After eventually making his debut in a League Cup encounter away to Chelsea, he only made a further 4 appearances for the first team in 2011-12. Such was the case with the lack of first team action, he was allowed to move on in the following summer, with the club selling him to Belgium club Gent for a similar fee that was bought for him.
After Fulham[]
Despite signing a four-year deal at Gent, he was quickly deemed surplus to requirements and was only there for a few months before moving back to his native Czech Rebublic to rejoin his former club Slavia Prague. This was quickly followed by short stints at Gent in Belgium, Rapid Bucharest in Romania and finally Śląsk Wrocław in Poland.
By 2016, having failed to make an impression at any of his most recent clubs, Marcel retired from professional football at the young age of 28.
