Matthew Briggs played for Fulham from 2001 until 2014 as a left back. Joining as a ten year old, he became the Premier League's youngest ever player for a period when he was just 16 years and 65 days old.

Career

Fulham (2001-2014)

Matthew prgressed through the age groups after joining around the age of ten. After making appearances for the U18 squad in 2006-07, he was a surprise selection for the first team substitutes' bench on the final day of the season away to Middlesbrough. Manager Lawrie Sanchez saw fit to bring him on in the second half and with that he became the youngest player for not only the club but the Premier League also.

Unfortunately for Matthew, he would have to wait over three years for his next first team appearance, playing in a 6-0 win over Port Vale in the second round of the League Cup, on 25 August 2010.

Throughout the next four years, he struggled to maintain a spot in the first XI, often used as a backup player. He did however manage a string of appearances in the 2011-12 Europa League campaign, scoring his only Fulham goal in a 3-1 win away to Crusaders in the 1st leg of the 2nd qualifying round.

After Fulham

Matthew was released from the club in the summer of 2014 after the club was relegated to the Championship. He was snapped up by Millwall spending one season there before moving on to Colchester United following a succesful loan spell with them. It was in March 2015, when he earned a call-up to play for Guyana, making his debut for them against Grenada.

After a quick spell at Chesterfield, he dropped down into non-league football, playing for various clubs interspersed with short spells in Denmark, playing for HB Køge and Vejle.

Matthew re-joined Fulham in April 2023 as an Academy player care mentor.
