Sean Davis played for Fulham from 1994 until 2004 as a midfielder. An academy product, he was the first player to play for one club in all four of England's professional divisions. He made the England squad on one occasion but failed to gain a cap, but did earn twelve caps for the U21 side.

Career[]

Before Fulham[]

Born in Clapham, London, Sean played for Wimbledon and West Ham United's youth setup between 1993 and 1994, but was released from both clubs.

No longer thinking about making it as a professional, he began playing football at Battersea Sports Centre.

Fulham (1994-2004)[]

An unexpected trial for Sean came whilst playing at Battersea Sports Centre, as he and two other players were handed an oppertunity to train at the club. After impressing, Sean was the only one of the three to be signed in 1994.

After impressing player-manager Micky Adams, Sean was handed a first team debut off the bench on 15 October 1996, aged 17 years and 25 days, during a 3-0 win over Cambridge United at Craven Cottage. Despite this, he was made to wait nearly two years before he played for the first team again under Kevin Keegan.

Used as a backup player in 1998-99, the 199-00 season was when Sean fully broke into the first team, seeing much more game time. He scored his first senior goal in the second match of the season, during a 2-1 win away at Northampton Town in the League Cup.

In 2000-01, Sean was now a regular starter for the team, and enjoyed a fantastic season with the club as they were promoted to the Premier League for the first time in their history. He scored a memorable last minute goal against Blackburn Rovers on 11 April 2001 during a 2-1 win which all but guaranteed promotion. This was celebrated by Sean with a dance which is fondly remembered by Fulham fans of the time.

Sean kept his place as Fulham moved into a new era of Premier League football, and despite playing a large number of matches in 2001-02, had to wait until the following season for this first Premier League goal in an interesting 2-2 draw away at Middlesbrough on 24 August 2002. Trailing 2-0 down heading into stoppage time, a goal from Sean followed by Facundo Sava in quick succession salvaged a point for Fulham.

After many impressive performances in the heart of midfield, Sean was called up to the England squad under Sven-Göran Eriksson in February 2003. Unfortunately, he was an unused substitute in a 3-1 loss to Australia at Upton Park and failed to win a cap.

After Fulham[]

Sean made the decision to leave Fulham in the summer of 2004 after ten years at the club. He signed for Tottenham Hotspur for around £1 million, after having only one year left on his contract at Craven Cottage.

He struggled to establish himself in the side after injuries began restricting his appearances. He was moved on by Spurs, and signed by Portsmouth in January 2006. This is perhaps where Sean enjoyed his football most after leaving Fulham. He made over 100 appearances in all competitions with Pompey, before he was sold to Bolton Wanderers in 2009.

After struggling with injury, Sean could only managed three league appearances for them, and after a short loan to Bristol City in 2012 to try and resurrect his playing career, he had to retire at the age of 32.

Since retiring from playing, Sean has had various roles back at Fulham, including writing as a columnist and commentating on matches alongside Gentleman Jim on Fulham's website.
