Willie Porter was a winger, who spent his time at Fulham from 1902 to 1904. Playing outside left whilst at the club, he was capable of playing on the opposite wing and did so for previous clubs. Born in Scotland, he moved down south to sign for Fulham in 1902 whilst playing for London Caledonians as an amateur throughout his career.
Career[]
Before Fulham[]
Born and raised in Scotland, Willie played his football at Cartvale in Busby, East Renfrewshire, before he signed for Hibernian in October 1898. Spending just shy of a season there, he moved to Third Lanark in 1899 and was on loan to Ayr Parkhouse for the 1900-01 season.
On 11 December 1901, Willie signed for Clyde, but was only there for two months as he moved down to England in February 1902.
Fulham (1902-1904)[]
Willie signed amateur forms for Fulham in February 1902, and made his debut in a 1-0 win over Wandsworth at Craven Cottage in a London League match. He played in the majority of the remaining games of the 1901-02 season.
He was made club captain for 1902-03 despite only being 24 years old. However, this season was blighted by injury for poor Willie and he spent much of it on the sidelines or playing with an injured knee. Because of this, he managed just seven first team appearances during that campaign.
He was one of a small handful of players kept on by the club committee in the summer of 1903 as they sought to strengthen the squad to be allowed entry into the Southern League. Despite surviving the cull, Willie only made one first team appearance in 1903-04 and this proved to be his last for the club; a 2-0 loss away to West Ham United on 28 December 1903.
After Fulham[]
Willie was let go in May 1904, and after continuing playing for London Caledonians, signed for Chelsea a year later in 1905. He spent two seasons there, making two first team appearances.
He then had short spells at Brighton & Hove Albion & Luton Town. All the while he mainly turned out for London Caledonians during these years, and played for them until the end of the 1908-09 season.
By 1910 he had emigrated to Canada, and served during the First World War for the Canadian Expeditionary Force as a Quartermaster Sargeant in the Canadian Infantry.
He remained living in Canada for the rest of his life, and was living in Toronto when he passed away on 8 December 1936 at the age of 58.
